Voice of Concerned Mothers (VCM) was established on February 19, 1998, by women from various social and educational backgrounds willing to voice their concern over a variety issues resulting from the economic and political crises in Indonesia.
Since its establishment SIP has been independent as well as upholding the principle of communialism, just, and refusing any form of violence. In its development from an impromptu movement, VCM has become a women community-based association. VCM was legitimized by Notary Act No. 22 dated July 21, 2000. At present, VCM, through its pre-cooperative activity, has active members about 600 persons. About 10,000 non-active members across 13 locations in Jakarta and nearby areas are receiving assistance through VCM's activities.
VCM's activities are divided into two: Economic activity and learning activity. Economic activity aims at facilitating members so that they will be able to build their economic capacity and will therefore be able to independently raise women's awareness on their economic rights. Learning program aims to provide members with information on issues being confronted by women, issues ranging from economic, social and culture issues. Thus the members obtain wider knowledge. A variety of activities carried out by VCM have become a learning process, raising the level of confidence and awareness to initiate self-development toward better changes. |
